Our Birds Unit Study was a great way to learn about all types of birds. We completed this unit study in August 2021, when we had a 5, 3, and 1 year old.
The first two weeks of our unit focused on birds in general. We learned about their life cycle, different types of birds, and their habitats. Placing the stickers in our sticker books helped us learn about different bird habitats.
After reading about bird beaks, we tried to pick up small pebbles using different types of “beaks”. We used flat popsicle sticks, tweezers, and two fingers. Later, we made bird feeders using birdseed, gelatin, and cookie cutters.
One of our poetry tea times focused on robins. We read two robin poems and learned some robin facts. Our special snack for this week was seeds with m&ms to represent robin’s eggs and the color on her belly.
After our two weeks of “general bird studies”, we spent a week on penguins! Tacky the Penguin is one of my favorite picture books and I enjoyed getting to share it with my kids during the unit.
During the final week of our unit, we learned all about owls. We then took our culminating field trip of the unit to the Birds of Prey Center. This is a field trip my kids have talked about over and over in the last year since we visited. They were absolutely enthralled during the live show, and getting to walk around and see the different birds in their little homes was something I don’t think they’ll forget for a very long time.
If you live near, or visit, Charleston, its a place you definitely should add to your itinerary.
My favorite thing about this unit is the way that my kids will still run from the window to our “Backyard Birds of South Carolina” poster to try and figure out what bird they see. We’ve spotted quite a few! Check out some other fun activities we did in this unit study, see what shows and movies we watched, and get the links to the books we read with my FREE Birds Unit Study planning guide.
