People like to call homeschoolers "weird" but isn'

People like to call homeschoolers "weird" but isn't that a compliment? Wouldn't everyone love the option of spending days exploring their own interests at their leisure?

I love that we're able to embrace our kids' quirks, loves, hopes, and dreams, without focusing so much on whether they're performing "at grade level" (that's a made up benchmark, people) or can "pass the test" (another false marker of achievement).

While we still work hard to prepare our kids with skills they'll need to be successful in the future, it sure is nice to spend just as much time crafting, visiting museums & historic sites, and watching their costumed performances every day!

Last week…homeschool, homeschool, homeschool, field trip to the fish lift, & celebrating Andrew’s 37th birthday!

We took a visit to the St. Stephen Fish Lift this week and learned about the hatchery, the wildlife, hydroelectricity, and yes, AN ELEVATOR FOR FISH 😆

To help the fish along their journey, this special device closes fish inside, raises the water level, and allows them to cross over to the lake from the canal.

It was so interesting and fun to experience. Free tours for groups of less than 30 are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays this season, be sure to schedule yours ASAP!

No child hates learning! But they might hate the subject matter!

This is one of the reasons I love utilizing a unit study approach in our homeschool. First, I get to pick topics I'm pretty sure will appeal to my kids. Secondly, I get to choose how we interact with those topics in ways I know they'll enjoy. And finally, if they hate the topic, we are going to move on soon to something they DON'T hate!

And if they hate it enough, or I do, homeschooling affords us the flexibility to stop right in the middle and do something else instead. Unit studies that I create means we aren't beholden to an expensive curriculum and have the table of contents hanging over our heads to get it finished by a certain date.

Have you asked your kids for ideas about what they hope to learn in the coming school year? We're quickly approaching our first year using Story of the World as the anchor for our unit studies and I am SO excited to see all the things we get to discover together!

Last week! We learned about insects, spent a day at Botany Bay beach, and wrapped up our week with a super cool scavenger hunt at the St. George satellite campus of the Lowcountry Children’s Museum.

The weather is gorgeous and we are loving every minute we can spend outside!

A leisurely stroll, down a sunny path, through a maritime forest, will take you to an otherworldly place…Botany Bay Beach. This absolutely gorgeous spot features great wildlife spotting, low crowds, absolutely gorgeous shells, and secluded wooded spots to set up your blanket and enjoy the day.

This is my favorite place on the planet and I’d spend every day here if I could! If you plan on visiting, be aware there are NO bathrooms and you’ll probably want to visit at low tide, since almost all of the beach disappears when the tide comes in. Also, while you’re free to hunt for beautiful shells, they have to stay on the beach for others to enjoy!
