Celebrating Groundhog Day in Our Homeschool

January 16, 2023

February 2 is coming up soon, so I wanted to share a few easy and fun things we do to celebrate Groundhog Day in our Homeschool.

On February 1st, one day before the big event, we read The Night Before Groundhog Day We also decorate and make these free hats! We assemble the hats and leave them on the table for the morning.

Even though I am NOT an early riser, I make sure I’m up in time to watch the Punxsutawney Phil ceremony live. You can find the live stream on YouTube! I was so amazed the first time I watched it at how much fanfare there is around the big event! It looks like it would be so much fun to attend live one day!

We read Groundhog Day by Gail Gibbons, and make shadows with our groundhogs on sticks and flashlights. (We’ve done some great activities with shadows in our homeschool this year!) Groundhog day is a great time to talk about making predictions! You can make predictions before going to bed on February 1st, and see if your predictions were correct after you watch the event.

For some more fun, my preschoolers have enjoyed this letter matching activity . I’m also really excited to be able to use a few of the activities in my newly updated groundhog day packet with my first grader this year! We will be using the weather forecast and the map reading activities together.

From “Talk Like a Pirate Day” to “Ice Cream Sundae Day”, the special holidays we get to celebrate together are such a fun part of homeschooling. What is your favorite silly holiday to celebrate in your homeschool? I would love to hear what it is and how you celebrate!
