Field Trips, Outdoor Adventures, Ultimate Outsiders

Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site

April 24, 2023

The very first field trip we ever took as “official” homeschoolers was to Charles Towne Landing back in 2020. It was the first state park we visited with our Park Passport and the very first stamp in our Ultimate Outsiders book. It was pretty amazing to look at the pictures of our kids in just two years. I was pushing the littlest in a stroller that first year. She was only about 6 weeks old. This time she walked most of the way by herself!

This year, it was one of the first field trips we took as well. We went specifically to see the Red Wolves, since we were doing a fairytales unit and studying Little Red Riding Hood. However, there’s SO much more to see and do here!

Animal Forest

History

The kids love getting to walk onboard The Adventure, a model merchant ship.

A walking path takes you past old settlements and house models. This was perfect preview for our American History and Geography unit study when we learned about Life in the Colonies.

A different path, through the gardens, has some old cannons that were a highlight for the kids as well!

The animal forest has the cutest otters, and deer that seemed to think we were friends. It was so fun to watch them and talk to them.

On our most recent trip, we visited the small museum located in the visitor’s center. I was blown away by how informative and intricate a lot of the displays were. It really helps children imagine what the time period would have been like.

If you live in or plan to visit Charleston with kids, this park should be at the top of your list! You get so many unique experiences in one place. And for other South Carolina adventures, check out our experiences at some of the other SC State Parks here!
