Earth Science Rocks and Minerals Unit Study

February 13, 2023

In September 2022, when our kids were 6, 4, and 2, we completed our Rocks and Minerals unit study. This was part of our larger Earth Science unit which included learning about weather and natural disasters.

During the first part of our unit, we learned about the makeup of our planet. We studied crust, mantle, and core, and learned about the plates that make up earth’s surface. We talked about what can happen when plates are moving by each other or colliding (earthquakes and volcanoes!)

A huge part of our unit started with this earth science kit from National Geographic. It had great experiments and supplies inside. A particular favorite was the volcano we got to make and watch erupt.

As a special conclusion to our unit, we took a camping trip to Linville, NC where we had the opportunity to explore landforms like rocky rivers, mountains, a cavern, and a waterfall! You can read more about our camping trip here on the blog next week.
