Edisto Beach state park is the closest of the oceanfront state parks to us. We’ve visited three times since we first started collecting our Ultimate Outsider stamps.
First, we visited in 2020 to explore the park and get our Ultimate Outsider stamp. We walked one of the shortest hiking trails, visited the nature center, and played at the beach.
A few months later, our second time, we went after a visit to the Serpentarium on the island to get the Ultimate Outsider stamp that I forgot the first time. (Oops!)
And finally, in December of 2022, we had a very cool opportunity to see an archeological dig site and hear a talk on the Native Americans who once lived in the area. They left behind a mound of shells and other objects, called Spanish Mount. Sadly, erosion is washing it away. In a few years, the mound will no longer exist. Archaeologists are racing against time to study this unique piece of history before it is lost forever!
The entire island of Edisto, I think, has the perfect Southern-Small Town-Laid Back-Beachy Vibe. Once you’re on the island, it immediately feels like you must slow down and take everything in.
And the state park keeps right up with this theme. It’s never been crowded when we’ve visited, or loud, just peaceful and with so many things to explore, three times wasn’t enough for us to see everything. We’ll definitely be paying Edisto Beach State Park a visit again soon! Until then, don’t forget to check out some of our other South Carolina State Park adventures!
