Truly, what’s better in childhood than a good zoo day? And we’ve had quite a few. Our zoo of choice is Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, SC. It’s a big drive for us, so we try to pack a lunch and enjoy a full day when we’re able to go there.
My grandparents often give the kids cash in their birthday cards, which winds up in an envelope with their name on a post-it stuck to the side of the fridge. When I finally counted it all a few months ago, I realized we had more than enough to buy a family membership and the kids were thrilled to spend their gift money this way.
The bird house features my very favorite animals at the zoo…PENGUINS! We love watching them jump and slide off of the rocks and glide through the water!
The gorillas are another Housand family favorite! The last time we visited them, our middle daughter was convinced this one was trying to touch her hand!
The farm is another of our kids’ favorite places, and nearby, you’ll find a playground as well as a carousel and small train for the kids to ride for an additional fee
One of the coolest things about Riverbanks Zoo, isn’t the zoo at all, but is located across the river. You can take a tram or walk to The Riverbanks Botanical Gardens. They are free to visit with admission to the zoo. Besides the beautiful seasonal plantings and relaxing pathways, the gardens have a massive children’s play area complete with a huge treehouse, musical walking path, and dinosaur playground!
Any zoo day is a good day, in my opinion! What about you? Do you also love visiting the zoo as a family? What are your favorite animals, and what makes your local zoo unique? Let me know in the comments!
