Visiting SC State Parks is one of our favorite things to do as a family! The one we’ve visited most frequently is Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site. It’s just a short drive from our house, so we’ve visited for fun, for learning, for a First Day Hike, and for some other special occasions.
We started out visiting here long before I knew we could collect stamps and complete a challenge. We had our engagement pictures done here way back in 2011! Since then, it has been so cool to snap photos of the kids in the same spot as they’ve grown.
The site is located just a few miles from our house, so it’s super easy to visit! I also love that it’s usually empty and the kids can run free and explore without getting in anyone’s way.
This state park is located on the Ashley River and was an active trading town from 1697 until the start of the Revolutionary War. Archaeologists are learning more about the history of this unique site all the time. Find out more about this important place in history here.
The kids’ favorite part of the park is the miniature replica of what the town looked like in its prime. And of course we all love walking through and around the old bell tower.
I absolutely love the tabby fort walls and the giant oak trees draped in moss. Because the park is almost always empty, its easy to feel transported back in time here. It’s a beautiful place to enjoy both history and nature.
If you’re planning a visit to Colonial Dorchester, bring a lunch and your walking shoes! You’ll absolutely love the views and the history lesson! Check out some of our other state park adventures here!
