Let’s talk about homeschool summer break. We consider ourselves “year round” homeschoolers, because we truly are always looking for opportunities to learn together. However, we do take the entire month of May “off” from official sit-down-school activities.
Even though we are out of school, no one in our family (and especially not me) does well with a straight month of no planned activities. I realized this in December 2021 when I attempted to take the month off for a nice, leisurely Christmas break. This fiasco made me realize that no one in our family, least of all me, does great without a schedule for that long.
So with that in mind, here’s how we plan our break. Each weekday, I have one indoor and one outdoor activity planned. May in Charleston is already HOT, so we usually try to get outside for that activity soon after breakfast. Each day of the week has its own “theme” for the entire month.
Mondays: Chalk Fun & You be the Chef
We do an outdoor activity with sidewalk chalk, then come inside and make a yummy snack to eat. Many Mondays we will enjoy an episodes of Kids Baking Championship while we wait for our food to be ready.
Tuesdays: Inside Out & Arts and Crafts
We do an outdoor activity that is usually done inside, and we do an art or craft activity indoors later.
Water Play Wednesday & Chill Movie Day
After our water play (in a kiddie pool, sprinkler, or water table) we head inside, dry off, and enjoy a movie with themed snacks indoors. The snacks don’t have to be complicated! Think goldfish while watching Finding Nemo!
Thursdays: Sensory Play & Physical Fun
We enjoy an outdoor sensory activity, and then do something physically active inside in the afternoon.
Field Trip Fridays!
We take field trips on Fridays during the school year too, so this is one part of our rhythm that stays the same.
I’d love to share our 2023 list with you! It has some specific activity suggestions that don’t require a ton of money and use typical supplies that most families have on hand. Grab it (for FREE!) by entering your email address below.
And if you are still finishing up your year, make sure you check out next week’s post detailing the three things we do to make the last day of homeschool special!
What are some things your family does during your homeschool summer break? Do you prefer to have no plans, or does your family thrive with some planned activities like mine? I’d love to hear what you do in the comments!
